  • Sarah Brightman Brings "A Christmas Symphony" To Ovation Hall

Whether you fell in love with her lush vocals through her classical recordings or during her star turning performance in The Phantom of the Opera or on a dance floor to her remixes to songs like "Harem", once you hear Sarah Brightman's music, you are an instant fan. The woman that has pioneered the classical crossover movement is now bringing "A Christmas Symphony" to Ocean's Ovation Hall on…, Michael Cook: You are returning to the stage and to touring this year with your Sarah Brightman-A Christmas Symphony show coming to Ovation Hall on Saturday December 4th. What is it like to finally be able to return to the stage after the extended pause we all had to take with the pandemic? , Sarah Brightman: It is such a relief. Not just to be performing again, but to employ everybody. So many people that are revered in music and the arts, they have been delivering packages and things like that, just to keep going; it has been so hard for everyone. For everyone to be able to go back to doing what they know they are able to do, it is really just fantastic. It is not only a relief for…, MC: The holidays are always magical, but for you to be able to perform a holiday show like A Christmas Symphony probably makes this time of year that much sweeter, is that fair to say? ,   SB: You know, it’s so funny because last year we were right in the middle of everything and Britain had locked down quite heavily. I knew that Christmas was going to be horrible for everyone that celebrates it, so I thought that maybe I could stream something? We put together a show for  streaming through my website and it did incredibly well. I wanted everyone who watched it to feel that we…, MC: A Sarah Brightman concert is always a treat, but showcasing people like Andrew Lloyd Webber and Aled Jones takes it to another level, particularly for the LGBTQ community. How sweet must it have been to get the chance to reunite with people you have collaborated with for this holiday show?,   SB: It was really great to get together just to help everyone else, especially at that tricky time. I have known Aled since he was a boy and of course Andrew, he was so desperate to get theater going again and did a lot of hard work in this country to deal with the government. He was working to make  sure that they knew that actors and actresses have to have a voice at this time. They were the…, MC: As a performer, what do you think is the highest note that you can hit? ,   SB: Well that is difficult to say. Whether you want a high note with perfect quality…what happens is you get older and you can't reach those kind of high notes. The voice is like a wine, it becomes richer. Your higher notes are better. I can go to a top C, but I may prefer to sit with a high note of a G or an A, it may sound better than the top C; it’s richer there and you get more enjoyment…, MC: That is a fantastic point;  “the voice becomes richer” . So many times, as artists progress in their career, people try to zero in on when they think they are not sounding like they always have. It sounds like though, that they are not supposed to. ,   SB: It’s supposed to change, you have to think of it as a wine. Like a really good wine that has all of that youth and freshness when it’s younger and then as it matures it actually becomes more of what people want.  Actually, it is lots of fun to work with as you get older. There is a repertoire that you would not have touched when you were younger, and now that you are older you are allowed.…, MC: Casey Wilson mentioned in her book The Wreckage Of My Presence that she sang “Send in The Clowns” at an audition and was not nearly ready from a life perspective and told the story brilliantly; it’s the same kind of idea. ,     SB: That’s true. Speaking of A Little Night Music , I went to see it in the summer when some theaters were doing their thing at the Buxton International Festival production. It was the first time back for the audience, they all sat very politely with their masks on, and there were all of these rules. At the end, people were crying; it was such a relief to see something and to be involved in…, MC: So many discovered you on a dance floor to the brilliant remixes of your music like 'Harem'. When did you look around and notice that you had a remarkably large LGBTQ fan base? , SB: Well my brother is gay and and he would love what I did. He would collect all of my albums and the newspaper articles, so that was my first experience. When I was doing records like “I Lost My Heart To A Starship Trooper” when I was hanging out in the late 70’s with Amanda Lear, I had a gay following then; it has always been there. The gay community has such a great taste for what is coming…,  , MC: The past year and a half has been truly life-changing for so many people. What do you think you have learned about yourself as a person and a performer in the past year and a half? , SB: Probably how many things I got wrong! How precious everything was that I worked for. Communicating with other people in what I do. I felt lucky because I could be with my family, but it was about the gifts that I have been given; I was just so desperate to use them again. I think that is really what I learned., Sarah Brightman appears at Ovation Hall this Saturday, December 4th (tickets available here ).

  • Anthony Wilkinson Brings "My Big Gay Italian Wedding" To Ocean Casino Resort

As live performances return to Ocean Casino Resort, that also includes phenomenal Off-Broadway productions like Anthony Wilkinson's My Big Gay Italian Christmas . As the fourth production in a series of now four smash Off-Broadway productions, My Big Gay Italian Christmas is sure to bring the hilarity, heart, and surprises that the first three productions did from this multiple Emmy-winning…, MC: You’re bringing My Big Gay Italian Christmas to Ocean Casino Resort on December 18th. What does it feel like to bring your production to a property that you love so much?, Anthony Wilkinson: I am excited, not really nervous. I am excited because it is my home away from home; I have been coming to Ocean as a player since it opened. The people that are there have become like family. It is a very cool vibe there because I know everyone. I am really excited because we are finally going to get to do one of my shows there.  , MC: Writers are always encouraged to  “write what you know” which many consider the keys to their success. Did you ever dream when you wrote your first production that it would become what it has become? , AW: I never thought that, no (laughs). With My Big Italian Wedding , I had no idea that it was going to take on the life that it did. I thought that it was just going to run for a year or a year and a half if we were lucky. Mostly because of Wedding , the excitement built because of the whole marriage equality movement. That really projected us into where we are today, it is amazing how the shows…, MC: The backbone of the shows always remain a strong and massively funny Italian family. Did it ever cross your mind to not write one thing or another because it may offend someone? Or did you simply decide you were going to write what you wanted to? ,   AW: I decided I was just going to write what I wanted. What I write is what I believe, like you said I write what I know. All of my stories are half fiction & half non-fiction. They’re based on some kind of reality. That is what I think is interesting for a lot of people because they see themselves in a lot of these stories. So often, people come up to me and say that they went through "…, MC: You are a Daytime Emmy winner for One Life to Live , writing for families like the Lords and the Buchanans. Do you think that writing for soaps helped in writing your stage productions? ,   AW: I would definitely say that my soap background comes through in a lot of my shows. A lot of people have said through the years in reviews that some of the shows have that soapy element. Wiring on a soap opera, the arc of the story was something that played on and on through all of the years that I was there. It was a different type of writing when you’re writing for a soap operas, but it …, MC: You wrote for One Life To Live for so long and won three Daytime Emmy Awards. I have to ask, where do you keep your Emmy Awards? So many people keep them in crazy places! ,   AW: (laughs) I keep them in my office at work.   , MC: When writing for One Life To Live , you got to see LGBTQ people start to come to prominence on daytime soaps. Was it surreal seeing the life people like you were living start to be played out on-screen? ,   AW: Absolutely. When I first started as an intern in 1995, it was definitely not the story; it was more traditional type of stories. You did not see LGBT related stories; before I got there, they did a story with the AIDS epidemic, but that was it. It was very taboo at the time. As time progressed, you started to see more. I was very proud of some of the stories that we did; they involved LGBTQ…, MC: Everyone has their passion projects; The Trevor Project is so important to you personally. What makes it so important to you personally? ,   AW: I was bullied as a child. I attempted suicide and had all kinds of problems when I was in my early teens; I was home schooled for a year and a half because I was afraid to leave my house. I was fortunate because I had a support system at home and at my high school, but I put it away and never looked back. When I turned thirty, I was asked to come to my school and talk about my story and I…, MC: For an outgoing and creative type of person as yourself, the last two years not being able to be on stage was probably immensely challenging. ,   AW: Absolutely. Between running my own shows and seeing all of these shows get pulled, it was just terrible. We had to reschedule so much. It was a tough time for all of us in the industry, but at least now we are at a place where people are excited to get back to live theater and I am excited to help bring it back.  , MC: What do you think is the biggest lesson that you have taken from the past eighteen months of not being able to perform live? ,   AW: I definitely didn’t like being alone for so long, I was losing my mind (laughs)! Not having the venue and not performing, it helped me appreciate what we have and the things in life that we took for granted. You still need a vaccine card and to wear a mask to see a Broadway show; some people don't mind, but it does make you miss the days where we didn't have to worry about such things.
