Our mission is to curb pet over-population through our clinic's spay and neuter programs, increase the number of animals adopted into loving homes through our shelter, and provide medical care and food to the feral population in Atlantic County. • South Jersey AIDS Alliance CEO Carol Harney-"We Are In This Together As A Community"

For Carol Harney, CEO of South Jersey AIDS Alliance, it is all about community partnership & changing hearts and minds. With a history of her own steeped in the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, Harney has watched as education has grown and as a result, health within communities have changed. While struggling with stigma involving issues like syringe access remains a critical issue, Harney's…, Michael Cook: What does South Jersey AIDS Alliance primarily do? , Carole Harney: We are an “AIDS Service Organization”. It is a community based organization with specific roots in the AIDS epidemic. That is where we started; we are an Atlantic City charity. We grew out of the needs for AIDS services back in the mid 1980’s & have been operational since 1985. Our original purpose was education & we grew into taking care of people that were HIV positive.…, MC: So you do much more than simply medically help the HIV/AIDS community, correct? , CH: Absolutely. It’s not easy to find out you have a chronic illness like HIV if your home life is not stable. We do end up doing a lot of assistance with housing and assistance with utility assistance; basic life functions. We work to help people get stable so that they can focus on their health. , MC: So you have personally seen the AIDS epidemic through it's infancy through where it is now, correct?, CH: In the twenty five years plus that I have been here, I have lived through the process. People were walking through the door and were dying. We are so grateful and lucky that times have changed with the disease and medication, but I am still surprised. For a newly positive person, AIDS may not be their first priority; it is still where they will sleep or how will they share their diagnosis…, MC: Where are your locations?, CH: We have two offices in Atlantic City, but we are also in Cape May County and Rio Grande, as well as Vineland, Bridgeton, Camden, and have offices in three state prisons in Cumberland County. Atlantic City is our largest site, but we do versions of what we provide in Atlantic City in other locations.   , MC: If you have been working with the HIV/AIDS community for twenty five years, it truly must be a passion to work with this community., CH: Absolutely.  We have lived through a very different time than we have today, which also gives us focus. The hope for the future and that we will be a part of one day, ending the epidemic.   , MC: To see a generation come out of the initial AIDS epidemic with the knowledge of condom and safe sex practices, and now see the onset of PREP and some members of a new generation not being as careful as they could be, & then ending up with a different set of STI’s. It must be frustrating from a care perspective. , CH: It is. And it is frustrating that we are having some of those same conversations, as well as some of the judgmental issues. Our struggles recently with syringe access feels like the struggles in the 90’s with discrimination and stigma against people that need the help.   , MC: So many years later and with all of the advances that have been made medically, why do you feel that the advances made medically don’t match up with the advances our society has made in terms of stigma and stereotypes about these communities? , CH: I think we have made some advances, but think that it also has a lot to do with when it hits home with your own family. That is what we saw with the AIDS epidemic in the beginning. There was discrimination, then you started knowing people that were impacted; it changed the perspective. Active drug users are still hiding their syringe use; there is still the stigma. People are not as …,  , MC: Why do you think it is important like to have community support from organizations like Garden State Equality and businesses like Ocean Casino Resort? , CH: I think it comes back to visibility. We need to have these conversations more.  We need to have the conversations more and with businesses that get involved, a public statement for supporting something like syringe access, is a game changer for us. While we absolutely need funds to exist and provide service, statements can be almost more valuable. Here in Atlantic City we are being told by …, MC: Visibility only happens when people tell their stories. Shows like Pose brought people’s stories to the forefront, to an audience that may not have heard stories like this before. Would you agree? , CH: Absolutely; and I think that is how change happens. It doesn’t happen from a conversation between you and I. I could have the best intentions in the world, but it comes from moving hearts and minds and understanding that this affects real people and real lives. ,  , MC: What made working with the South Jersey AIDS Alliance and the community you work with daily your life’s passion? , CH: I went to college for public health and worked in family planning & women’s health, moving to HIV/AIDS. I found even more of a home with that community because of the multi-cultural community. The experiences that I have had make my life so abundant. My everyday is talking to people on my board, lawyers, doctors, and then I could sit down with the person who is needing care. I don't think…
  • Anthony Wilkinson Brings "My Big Gay Italian Wedding" To Ocean Casino Resort

As live performances return to Ocean Casino Resort, that also includes phenomenal Off-Broadway productions like Anthony Wilkinson's My Big Gay Italian Christmas . As the fourth production in a series of now four smash Off-Broadway productions, My Big Gay Italian Christmas is sure to bring the hilarity, heart, and surprises that the first three productions did from this multiple Emmy-winning…, MC: You’re bringing My Big Gay Italian Christmas to Ocean Casino Resort on December 18th. What does it feel like to bring your production to a property that you love so much?, Anthony Wilkinson: I am excited, not really nervous. I am excited because it is my home away from home; I have been coming to Ocean as a player since it opened. The people that are there have become like family. It is a very cool vibe there because I know everyone. I am really excited because we are finally going to get to do one of my shows there.  , MC: Writers are always encouraged to  “write what you know” which many consider the keys to their success. Did you ever dream when you wrote your first production that it would become what it has become? , AW: I never thought that, no (laughs). With My Big Italian Wedding , I had no idea that it was going to take on the life that it did. I thought that it was just going to run for a year or a year and a half if we were lucky. Mostly because of Wedding , the excitement built because of the whole marriage equality movement. That really projected us into where we are today, it is amazing how the shows…, MC: The backbone of the shows always remain a strong and massively funny Italian family. Did it ever cross your mind to not write one thing or another because it may offend someone? Or did you simply decide you were going to write what you wanted to? ,   AW: I decided I was just going to write what I wanted. What I write is what I believe, like you said I write what I know. All of my stories are half fiction & half non-fiction. They’re based on some kind of reality. That is what I think is interesting for a lot of people because they see themselves in a lot of these stories. So often, people come up to me and say that they went through "…, MC: You are a Daytime Emmy winner for One Life to Live , writing for families like the Lords and the Buchanans. Do you think that writing for soaps helped in writing your stage productions? ,   AW: I would definitely say that my soap background comes through in a lot of my shows. A lot of people have said through the years in reviews that some of the shows have that soapy element. Wiring on a soap opera, the arc of the story was something that played on and on through all of the years that I was there. It was a different type of writing when you’re writing for a soap operas, but it …, MC: You wrote for One Life To Live for so long and won three Daytime Emmy Awards. I have to ask, where do you keep your Emmy Awards? So many people keep them in crazy places! ,   AW: (laughs) I keep them in my office at work.   , MC: When writing for One Life To Live , you got to see LGBTQ people start to come to prominence on daytime soaps. Was it surreal seeing the life people like you were living start to be played out on-screen? ,   AW: Absolutely. When I first started as an intern in 1995, it was definitely not the story; it was more traditional type of stories. You did not see LGBT related stories; before I got there, they did a story with the AIDS epidemic, but that was it. It was very taboo at the time. As time progressed, you started to see more. I was very proud of some of the stories that we did; they involved LGBTQ…, MC: Everyone has their passion projects; The Trevor Project is so important to you personally. What makes it so important to you personally? ,   AW: I was bullied as a child. I attempted suicide and had all kinds of problems when I was in my early teens; I was home schooled for a year and a half because I was afraid to leave my house. I was fortunate because I had a support system at home and at my high school, but I put it away and never looked back. When I turned thirty, I was asked to come to my school and talk about my story and I…, MC: For an outgoing and creative type of person as yourself, the last two years not being able to be on stage was probably immensely challenging. ,   AW: Absolutely. Between running my own shows and seeing all of these shows get pulled, it was just terrible. We had to reschedule so much. It was a tough time for all of us in the industry, but at least now we are at a place where people are excited to get back to live theater and I am excited to help bring it back.  , MC: What do you think is the biggest lesson that you have taken from the past eighteen months of not being able to perform live? ,   AW: I definitely didn’t like being alone for so long, I was losing my mind (laughs)! Not having the venue and not performing, it helped me appreciate what we have and the things in life that we took for granted. You still need a vaccine card and to wear a mask to see a Broadway show; some people don't mind, but it does make you miss the days where we didn't have to worry about such things. If…, My Big Gay Italian Christmas comes to Ovation Hall on December 18th, 2021 at 8PM.,  , Visit  theoceanac.com for more informa, t, ion,

  • Q&A with Warren Richards, Ocean's SVP of Food and Beverage - Ocean Blog | Ocean Casino Resort

From London To Wynn Las Vegas To Ocean Casino Resort; Warren Richards Brings “Passion To The Process, ”, With a foundation based in London and business acumen gained at establishments like Wynn Las Vegas, Ocean Casino Resort ’s Senior Vice President of Food & Beverage, Warren Richards, brings a monumental amount of experience and high standards to Atlantic City. As Warren’s vision for food and beverage services at Ocean start to take shape, he sat down with us for an extensive chat. We touched…, MC: How did you land in the casino/hospitality business to start? , Warren Richards:, I grew up in London and was very fortunate to have parents that loved to travel in Europe. I think I'm here today because of that. When you visit cities like Seville and Barcelona in Spain, or experience the beauty of Italy and France; you see these things as a kid and you start to recognize that there is a big old world out there. That is what piqued my interest. I was originally supposed to go…, MC: What brought you to working at Wynn? , WR:, I gave up a very good job in California with the self-confidence that I could find an amazing career with a great culture of success by moving to Las Vegas. I found that first with the Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group. Beginning with Wolfgang himself, and extending through the executive management team, that was a restaurant group that operated with a philosophy that I agreed with. I had a…, MC: What do you think the culture at Wynn taught you that you have been able to bring to the Ocean Casino Resort now? , WR:, There is a relentlessness to the executive management team at Wynn. I was amazed by the intensity to which everyone applied themselves to the building on a daily basis. We wanted to experience things through the eyes of our guests; from arriving in valet, through the check-in process to dining in one of our restaurants. We were highly critical of ourselves, painstakingly analyzing each step in…, MC: With all of the experiences that you have had in your career, what brings you that same kind of passion here at Ocean Casino Resort? , WR:, The passion comes from the process; that is the fun part. That is the part that makes you want to get out of bed in the morning, when you are continuing to work towards something. I don't want to be somewhere where everything is perfect and there is nothing more to do. The process of moving a project from point ‘A' to point ‘B' and hopefully making it better, that is exciting. At Ocean, I see a…, MC: What is your Favorite Cocktail & Favorite Meal at the Ocean Casino Resort?, WR:, My favorite cocktail at Ocean Casino Resort is from American Cut. I think American Cut has the best back bar and there is a smoked Old Fashioned at American Cut called “Smoke on the Water” that I think is worth the trip for sure. I think Amada , when you are sitting over by the window and you are enjoying delicious lobster right off the grill, I think that is a great experience. I am slightly…, MC: As you now offer your own mentorships as you received earlier in your career, what is the kind of advice you offer to people looking to you for guidance? , WR:, I have always enjoyed the mentoring side of things. I currently teach a monthly hospitality and service class as I am trying to introduce a different perspective to a lot of the operators that are here. I think we have great management in the food and beverage division. My advice is that everything is possible. Creativity will be encouraged. I want them to be curious and ask, “can this be done…, MC: How have you stayed creative during the past year? , WR:, I think my food and beverage philosophy is 5% Thomas Keller, 5% Wolfgang Puck, 5% Grant Achatz, 5% Paul Bartolotta (who I worked for), and a whole lot of other incredible chefs and operators all rolled into one. I used this period to actually go back and re-read and re-listen to some of the words that were part of my own upbringing in hospitality. I opened books on my bookshelf that I had not…, LEARN MORE ABOUT DINING AT OCEAN CASINO RESORT

  • Hayden James On Returning To The DJ Booth & His Brand New Single

As one of the most prominent names in the industry, Hayden James is beyond ready to head back to the DJ booth to entertain the masses. He is getting that opportunity on September 18th, as he marks his debut at HQ2 Nightclub. The crowd can expect plenty of James’ signature tracks, including his new single ‘Rather Be With You’. I recently sat down with this Down Under sensation to talk about his…, Michael Cook: When did you know that music was going to be the passion that you would be following? , Hayden James: I think it was really early on. I had played musical instruments throughout my schooling, the saxophone, guitar and I sang as well. I always knew that I wanted to be in music, but specifically in electronic music it was a bit later. I have an older brother who introduced me to the likes of the Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, and I think that when I was about sixteen or seventeen, it…, MC: What do you think it is about the electronic music scene that has helped it become so remarkably massive, with so many artists creating such innovative and unique sounds?, HJ: I think a lot of it is really people being able to do it in their homes. You don't have to go to a big studio or have an incredible technical knowledge of synthesizers, mixing or production. It is all on YouTube for you. Someone has done it and you can watch it. I think having a laptop and having all of the programs like Logix and them being so much more intuitive now has really dropped the…, MC: So much of your music has a diversity to it. While it does have one distinct sound, it still has a very profound evolution. For instance, the remixes to “Between Us’ with Panama are amazing, and capture a particular time in your career. How do you choose the kind of artists that you collaborate with?, HJ: A lot of those people are friends that I have wanted to work with in the past, but there are also situations of just meeting people through my publisher. Of course, that was pre-lockdown so you could actually go and find those people. I love writing the music, but I love writing the melodies and the hook ideas for the vocals, so being able to be in the same room as someone and to be able to…, MC: Your lockdown has been extremely eventful, you had a baby last year. Congratulations! , HJ: Thank you! I had a little boy, he is two and that was just before lockdown. Now we just had a little girl as well, so it has been super busy! [embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/CRR6hDQtrzn/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link[/embed], MC: The live entertainment industry was hit in a completely different way than so many other industries. As we emerge into the world again, do you now see how truly important what you do is to so many people?, HJ: Absolutely. I think I have listened to a lot of interviews from people as well, and it is not like we did it intentionally, but it is almost like we took it for granted before. We were traveling and doing so much, and talking about the flights and the set times. I just want to be at a place with some music and some people. I actually haven’t had that moment yet, I am still in lockdown in…, MC: Your HQ2 gig is truly going to be one of your first since lockdown, so this is going to be like an event never seen before. , HJ: Mate, I am so pumped! I have never been more excited about something. Just to be there and play all of the music that I have wanted to play for the past eighteen months. I have new music, I have a new album that I have finished, so there will definitely be new records from me. Also new music from other DJ friends who have been putting things out the last few months; I am so jazzed. I have…, MC: Tell me about your new single ‘Rather Be With You’. The vibe is distinctly you, but it definitely has a fresh sound to it. , HJ: It won’t be on my new album, but it is definitely where I am taking my new record, It is more dance-y, more energetic. It was created in lockdown and when I was writing those drops and sounds, I would close my eyes and I was in a big club. Visually, I was trying to break through and express what it would feel like in a big club beyond what was in front of me, which was my studio. It is a nod…, MC: You wrote on Katy Perry’s Witness album, so let’s manifest something; who else would you absolutely die to work with? , HJ: Yes, we are going to put it out there and it will come true! I would love to work with Pharrell Williams, I am a bit fan of him since I was a kid. I would love to work with Daft Punk again, since I grew up listening to them, but sadly they called it quits so that may not happen. I would love to work with the Rufus Boys, Calvin Harris (I love that big pop/dance stuff), Silk City, Mark Ronson…, MC: When does Hayden James feel the most authentically himself?, HJ: There are two scenarios; there is me being on stage and in the middle of a set and closing my eyes for a second and saying “I LOVE this” . There is also me being me and being peaceful, and it is just being with family as well. I am just so lucky to be able to do what I do. Like we talked about before, how important is music for people in this world?-incredibly. It lifts people’s spirits, it…, For tickets to Hayden James on HQ2 at Ocean Casino Resort, click here , Follow Hayden James on Instagram

Fall in love with these team member stories below:, A Lucky Friday the 13th, By Joe Y. , So the year was 1988, I was at the movies with some friends watching Steve Gutenberg and Daryl Hanna in High Spirits. There were these 2 girls and a guy sitting a few rows in front of us. We started throwing popcorn at them. Movie was not all that good, so we were kinda going back and forth. After the movie we met them in the lobby and started talking. The girls were friends and living together…, Steel Pier and the Circus, By Silnery W., Summer of 1996. I’m 17 years old and I was working on the Steel Pier. I had been talking to a guy friend of mine one slow night during the week, when one of our security guards comes over and sits down next to the booth in a folding chair. Right after my friend leaves, the security guard whom I’ve never spoken to before asks me if that’s my boyfriend. The strange thing about this was my…, True Love in Her Heart, By Michael D., I meet my wife while at Bally’s. I was executive pastry chef and she was doing fund raising for the united way in the building. Every holiday, we would do employee sales to raise money for the united way. She made me bake; breast cancer cookies, king cakes, pound cakes, pies, cakes, heart cookies and many other items. Finally, one day I saw the true love in her heart to give back to those in need…, A Blind Date, By Gina R., Our story began with a blind date. Our mutual friends decided it would be a good idea to set us up. He and his best friend were into classic cars. I kept hearing how I have to meet this nice guy, while I would reply “yeah, yeah.” While his friend would…
