  • Ocean Is "Talking About HERstory" This Year For Black History Month

Annually in February, Black History Month is our country's opportunity to reflect and honor the past of our vibrant  and amazing African-American citizens, embrace those making change today, and set an example for those who will hopefully change the world in the future. This year, Ocean Casino Resort is collaborating with, The African American Heritage Museum, in Atlantic City to bring some of that storied history to life.    Ocean will be making a donation to the African American Museum, who will be bringing one of their traveling exhibits directly to Ocean. Our back-of-house team will be able to soak up the history in the on-display exhibit on both February 2nd and 3rd. The exhibit is called "Talking About HERstory," and it puts 32 African-American…, Margaret “Maggie” Creswell, are profiled, and the exhibit was funded by, Rita Mack, , a noted African-American businesswoman who with her husband Ralph, has owned two separate McDonalds locations in the AC area for over thirty years.    We spoke with the founder of The African American Heritage Museum,, Ralph Hunter Sr., , as he prepared to bring the exhibit to Ocean. He not only spoke at length about the exhibit and why it is important to share this history today, but reflected on the storied history of the African-American community in the Atlantic City area.   , As a historian of both Atlantic City and Southern New Jersey as a whole, what are some of the points of African-American history in Atlantic City that you want to be sure are noted in this exhibit?,  , Ralph Hunter Sr, : The exhibit is called “ Talking About HERstory” and points out African-American women from our region. One of the women in the exhibit was a multi-millionaire from the area, her name was, Madame Sarah Spencer Washington., She owned a company called Apex, a hair care company. During the Depression, she had four thousand people working for her worldwide. She had beauty schools in six major cities on the East Coast and taught the first group of African-American women how to be entrepreneurs. They became the first group of African-Americans, male or female, to own or operate their own businesses. She was the first…, Dr. Vera King Farris, was the first African American President of Stockton University. During her tenure, she brought the Holocaust museum to Stockton University. Rita Mack owns the largest volume of McDonalds franchises in Atlantic City, who also sponsored the exhibit. I met Rita Mack some time ago and she wanted to honor African American women in our region and give them their just due and that is what we did.   , The African American women of Atlantic City truly are a long and storied lineage that you have captured., RHS:  Absolutely. In 1927,, Enoch, ", Lucky" Johnson, (of Boardwalk Empire fame) hired the first female police officer in the United States who happened to be an African American woman. Her salary was the same salary that male police officers were being paid at that time, $2,500.00 annually. The exhibit points out people like, Patty Harris, , who was a Broadway dancer and had a dance studio, homegrown from Atlantic City. She taught 20,000 kids how to become dancers over her 85-year career.   , To be a historian of Atlantic City, what do you think is one of the most remarkable changes that you got to see for the African-American community, and specifically for women? , RHS:  I truly thought we would actually see more. Integration, Brown vs. Board of Education, back in 1927 the beaches in Atlantic City were segregated. We can go back and tell those stories. The Democratic Convention came to Atlantic City when, Fannie Lou Hamer, gave her  “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired” speech. I have a trillion things; there isn’t just one thing that sticks out. I think honoring African American History in February is minuscule; I don't see African-American history as  “African American History,"  I see it as American History. I travel to more than 100 schools and universities annually with traveling exhibits and I get the…, Ocean Casino Resort,  be a part of the solution and giving their employees the opportunity to look cross-culturally and see the importance of these accomplishments.   , It must be remarkable to see how Atlantic City has changed for the African American community in so many ways.., RHS:  When I arrived in the 1950’s it was a booming town, with 30,000 African Americans who owned and operated their own businesses, becoming entrepreneurs  If I can take people back in time, to take them back to the 20's and 30's on Kentucky Avenue, or the fact that we had 13 African American doctors here, it was an amazing time. The Atlantic City High School in the 50s was one of the top ten…, For more information, follow theoceanac.com

While extravagant parties, colorful parades, and uplifting speakers fill the month of June for Pride, October is reserved for LGBTQ History Month, which celebrates the achievements, creations, and performances of queer icons through the years.  It’s also a time to laud the history of gay rights in the United States, from the legalization of same-sex marriage to workplace inclusivity.  In Atlantic…, History of The Gay Rights Movement, We can date the beginning of the gay rights movement back to the 1950s, when Harry Hay founded the first national gay rights organization, which was soon followed by the establishment of the first lesbian organization in 1955.  However, it wasn’t until the 1960s that the gay rights movement picked up speed.  In June of 1969, police raided Stonewall Inn, a gay club in Greenwich Village. The raid…, 2022 LGBTQ History Month, LGBTQ History Month was founded by Rodney Wilson, a high school history teacher from Missouri, in 1994. • Wine Down with Warren | Best Seat in the House

Senior Vice President of Food & Beverage, Warren Richards,  is the “go-to” person whenever you are looking for the best of anything at Ocean Casino Resort. Whether you're hungry for brunch or feeling a little adventurous at dinner, Warren's world travels and food & wine expertise makes him the perfect person to elevate your Ocean experience. Here are his recommendations when dining at…, Amada, Best seat:, The views at Amada may well be the best in the building. Tables along the floor-to-ceiling windows, while hard to come-by, are worth waiting for., To start:, While Jamon Iberico is always hard to resist as a kick-off to proceedings, a perfect meal for me at Amada would begin with a selection of classic tapas like the Croquetas de Jamon (Ham Croquettes), Polpo a la Gallega (sauteed Spanish Octopus) & Empanada filled with Spinach & Manchego Cheese., Main course:, A non-traditional “Surf & Turf” from the Planxa grill would be the succulent & tender Langosta (Maine Lobster) & the Colorado Rack of Lamb, cooked mid-rare, with a trio of dipping sauces (Romesco, Chimichurri & Guindilla) – the Chimichurri being all I need. If sharing, the Paella Valenciana is worth making the centerpiece., Always say yes to dessert:, To finish, I'd pick the Tarta de Queso (Spanish Cheesecake). It is traditionally much less sweet than its American counterpart, served with Passion Fruit Curd & White Chocolate Sorbet., Wine not try something new?, Amada features an entirely Spanish wine list, so don’t be afraid to come here & experiment. You’ll find refreshing & food-friendly wines that pair remarkably well with the cuisine without having to break the bank. I recommend something with great acidity & freshness like the Albariño de Fefiñanes to begin while enjoying your tapas. Next I would switch to a Tempranillo from the Toro…, American Cut, Best seat:, A booth at American Cut near the open kitchen is always a treat. The restaurant builds over the early part of the evening, coming to a crescendo of activity, energy and that addictive restaurant noise by 8pm., Seafood diet:, American Cut's Shellfish Towers do not disappoint & when the Stone Crab is in season, you’ll find me needing a hand towel about 15 minutes in., Steak or Fish?:, I always want our chefs to “turn up the volume” on flavor & the New York Strip Au Poivre was borne out of that philosophy. This steak is the perfect combination of rich steak flavor with an assertive black peppercorn crust. Dunk every third or fourth bite in a side of bearnaise & you are really eating like royalty. On nights off from red meat, Chef Romeo Di Bona features a variety of…, Pair your wine & dinner properly:, I hate to see people jumping straight to red in Steakhouses, so with apps at American Cut it should either be the “Smoke on the Water” (Smoked Old Fashioned with Woodford Reserve & Cedar Smoke) if you are doing things like the Double-Smoked Bacon or Wagyu Meatball. On the other hand, I would also run with bubbles if you are taking the Shellfish route. A hidden gem here is the Raventos i Blanc…, Sweet finish:, If your sweet tooth needs satisfying, then yes, the Crackerjack Sundae (Caramel Popcorn, Peanut Brittle, Popcorn Ice-Cream) is a must, but if you have the other kind of “sweet tooth”, then stick with the WhistlePig “Boss Hog” over a couple of rocks., Dolce Mare, Best Seat:, Tables alongside windows, much like Amada are something to behold, but the booths that back up to the window into the open kitchen are also a great place to dine at Dolce Mare., Get started right:, Chef Juliano Cannuscio’s Prosciutto Platter (shaved to order) is where I would typically start, although the Roasted Beets with Fig Jam & Goat Cheese are also a strong alternative., Mangia!:, Homemade filled pastas like the Lobster Ravioli or Truffle Ravioli with Spinach & Ricotta are a well spent mid-course before the Branzino al Forno which is paired with a silky cauliflower purée & vibrant rainbow Romanesco. Yes, the Veal Parmigiana or Milanese are excellent options too, but when I go to Dolce, I like to have the seafood shine., Raise a glass:, The Wine List has some fantastic coastal Italian wines, so if you are in a seafood mood, you can definitely do something like a Falanghina by Feudi di San Gregorio or a Fruiliano by Ronchi di Cialla. But with the Prosciutto, a Pinot Grigio is actually as good a pairing as you can ask for. That being said, this may be a two bottle meal, so the wines of Veneto are also well worth trying & I…, Espresso and more:, The perfect finish to dinner at Dolce Mare is the Frangelico Affogato (Espresso poured over Vanilla Ice-Cream & Frangelico Hazelnut Liquuer), or an Amaro (bittersweet liqueur) over rocks. If you are feeling really adventurous, try Cynar (an amaro with a heavy artichoke component) with a splash of club soda & a lemon. • Executive Director of Hotel Operations, Ryan Burch-"Ocean Casino Resort Is Unique In This Industry"

As Executive Director of Hotel Operations for Ocean Casino Resort , Ryan Burch had an unbelievable year. As we emerge on the other side of an unprecedented pandemic, Burch and I sat down and reflected on not just the challenges that he overcame, but on the work that is yet to come (as well as the game-changing differences made to the property this past year) !, Michael Cook: How did you find yourself in the hospitality world to begin with?, Ryan Burch:, I actually got into hospitality in high school. We hosted charity events around the school, and I had a class that involved coordinating those events. I had already worked in restaurants at sixteen, so I had some service in my background. I realized in high school how much I enjoyed it and decided that it was finally time to buckle down and make something of myself in college; that is when I…, MC: The last year has been the definition of change, especially for the casino business. What has it been like to be one of the people that has been essentially steering the ship during this past year?, RB:, It is quite a challenge. I was lucky enough to not be furloughed during this time period, so when things were ramping up and we were at the height of the pandemic, I was still in the trenches and got to experience it. I was able to watch as people came back to work and when that initial anxiety happened, I saw it first-hand. That was the biggest challenge, finding a way to make customers and team…, MC: What do you think the biggest challenge that the Ocean Casino Resort faced during this past fifteen months and how do you think you have come out on the other side?, RB:, Coming out on the other side, Ocean is set up in a unique way in this industry. We have a large property featuring some sprawling spaces, and a beautiful layout; it really lends itself to “comfortability” and helps people feel more relaxed with the property itself because you are not packed into small spaces together. Ocean gives you the ability to roam and explore. I think being outside this…, MC: Tell me a little bit about the park and how it has been taken to the next level during this time…, RB:, The first thing that we did prior to reopening The Park was to landscape and resod the entire space. We have revised and enhanced the sense of arrival, adding an additional entry point so you can enter directly from the main lobby. We have added signage and cut down concrete barriers to make it easier for customers to flow in and out of the area. I think this property is at its best when…, MC: What do you think you are most proud of during this past year?, RB:, We have made some amazing physical changes to the property over the past year. We just completed a terrific pool renovation, adding to the overall aesthetic of that area; we updated much of our high-end hotel product, including our Presidential suite; and our cabanas have gotten a complete refresh and look phenomenal. Moving forward, I want to focus on the service portion of hospitality. I am…, MC: What do you think sets Ocean Casino Resort apart and what really brings customers through the front doors more than at any other property?, RB:, I think what wowed me and what I hear and see on a day-to-day basis is the love that our customers have for the property. The feeling that they get when they are at Ocean is different from other casinos. There is a certain energy when you walk through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows in the lobby or stroll through The Park. You almost forget you are at a casino when you are in certain areas.…, MC: What do you impart to your employees as a leader to help them elevate their performance and take it to the next level?, RB:, I like to lean on the fact of first principles and going back to look at the first thing customers see & what stands in the way of meeting their expectations. A lot of us tend to deal with business by analogy; we look at other properties and see what they are doing, and we start doing the same thing because it is an established practice. I want people to start thinking about what we can do…, MC: As someone who is in leadership in the hotel industry, what do you particularly look for when you check into a hotel on your own?, RB:, The first things I look for when I walk into a hotel room are the glass and the door handle. Having worked in housekeeping earlier in my career those are the things that resonate with me as they are often overlooked. I have had instances where family members have refused to check into their hotel room until they waited for me to give it a once-over (laughs). LEARN MORE ABOUT OCEAN CASINO RESORT'S…
